H.E Bates का जन्म 1905 में Central England के Northampton में हुआ था | इनकी मृत्यु 1974 में हुई थी | इनका पहला Novel जब प्रकाशित हुआ तब इनकी उम्र 21 साल की थी | यहाँ इन्होने इस कहानी में एक गरीब को दर्शाया है जो अपनी मेहनत से अमीर बन जाता है | इस कहानी में मुख्य रूप से 6 पात्र है , जिनमे एक का नाम Benjy है जिसकी दिमागी हालत ठीक नहीं थी , इसकी पत्नी का नाम Florence है | Benjy के एक माता और एक पिता हो गए और इसके बाद एक डॉक्टर और एक Sanders है | यही कहानी के 6 पात्र हैं |
